Three icons collided at Long’s Bakery this week. In a since-deleted Instagram post, the doughnut destination at 1453 N. Tremont St. (317-632-3741) announced that Broad Ripple High School grad David Letterman and Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark stopped by to film part of an episode of Netflix interview series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman. FOX59’s photos from the visit, which reportedly took place early on Tuesday, reveal the TV host and the athlete bundled up for the weather, the latter in conspicuously branded Nike gear (likely part of her $28 million endorsement package). No word on what the duo ordered, but one photo appears to show Letterman clutching a classic glazed yeast.
Are Indiana’s new happy hours boosting bars as intended? When I talked to Rep. Jake Teshka about his legislation to lift Indiana’s 40-year ban on daytime specials, he said his hope was that happy hours could help save the region’s struggling local businesses, even as local substance use watchdogs warned of dangerous drinking. Five months in, The Indiana Lawyer reports a feared boom of overconsumption has yet to materialize, but the economic impact isn’t evident yet, either.
Another popular diner has been damaged by fire. Via Facebook, the Wayne Township Fire Department wrote that it was fighting a blaze at Mann’s Grill (1214 S. Tibbs Ave., 317-241-5801) Monday, posting images of heavy smoke over the building. The fire, which WISH reports was likely accidental, was restricted to the back of the structure, but there’s reportedly water damage throughout. This is the second fire for Mann’s, following another one 45 years ago. As previously noted, Four Seasons Family Restaurant (1935 N. Shadeland Ave., 317-375-0520) was significantly damaged in a fire on November 21. “We will rebuild and return for business as soon as possible,” its owners say.
A new churrasco restaurant has landed at Keystone at the Crossing. As we reported in October, Jacksonville-based Brazilian steakhouse chain Terra Gaucha chose 8487 Union Chapel Rd. for its first Midwestern outpost, which will officially open on Friday, December 13. A spokesperson for the business promises meat dishes prepared with “authentic Gaúcho seasonings and natural wood charcoal,” offered in a “price-fixed, all-you-can-experience dining parade.” (317-388-5040)
Triton Brewing Company and Bistro is calling it quits. The brewery at 5764 Wheeler Rd. opened in 2011. We reported then that its angle was its base, with “Stouts [that] are made with water calibrated to match that in Dublin, while the signature Railsplitter IPA is made with water befitting an American brew.” Via social media, the company wrote that “supply line challenges, a soft labor market, ever-shrinking margins, the attenuation of the craft beer market, and increased competition” prompted the decision to shutter. Its last day of service will be a “See You Later” celebration on Saturday, December 14.
The screens have come on at Tom’s Watch Bar in downtown Indy. We told you about the chain’s plans to move into 140 S. Illinois St. back in August, as well as its market differentiator of “360° viewing from every seat with a massive stadium screen surrounded by hundreds of additional screens.” Those screens flicked on Monday, including—per WRTV—“over 130 TVs.” All that tech might make the food and drinks an afterthought, so I’ll just tell you the company’s founder is the former chief concept officer for McDonald’s and move things along. West Fork Whiskey’s former downtown location has a new occupant. The Westfield distillery shuttered its tasting room at 1660 Bellefontaine St. in October, but the Kennedy-King corner spot wasn’t dark for long. New tenant The Alchemist says that during the day, it’s “a cozy spot for premium coffee and fresh pastries,” but “by night, the space turns into a sleek cocktail lounge with handcrafted drinks.” The second part of this business plan hasn’t kicked off yet (“Soon,” say its owners), but the java started flowing on Monday. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.
